Open Water Diver

Learn to Scuba dive and begin your exploration of the underwater world...

You will earn a lifetime, world wide recognised Open Water Divers certification, allowing you to dive with others to a maximum depth of 18m. 


Minimum age 10 yrs for Junior Open Water Divers and 15yrs for Open Water Divers (no max age limit)

Under 15 yrs must be accompanied by an adult

Be medically fit to dive - refer to dive medical requirements

Must be able to swim (200m, any stroke with no time limit, and also tread water/float for 10 mins)

Course Program

Capital Scuba provides a personalised dive service which includes a flexible approach to delivering the course content. The following schedule can be changed to meet individual or group requirements.

Introduction Evening (usually a Thursday evening for 2 hrs)

  • Complete course documentation

  • Provided with your Open Water Course crew-pack (manuals, training logbook, etc)

  • Sizing of scuba dive equipment

  • View Course Introduction Video

  • Advice/assistance with purchasing online dive gear (only if you want to buy some of your own gear)

  • Overview of self study requirements

Self-Study Theory (in your own time)

  • Watch 5 Training videos

  • Complete 5 Knowledge Reviews (KR's)

Theory (Usually a Saturday AM, a week after the Intro Evening)

  • Review of your self-study KR's

  • 4 short multi-choice quizzes

  • Tutoring in the use of dive tables and dive planning

  • Quick quiz on dive tables

Pool Skills Session (Saturday PM, after the Theory)

  • Swimming ability check (200m swim and tread water/float 10 mins)

  • Dive gear assembly and dismantle

  • Dive skills and safety procedures

Open Water Dives 1 and 2 (Usually the next day - Sunday)

  • Drive down to the coast - leave Canberra at 7:00AM

  • Training Dives 1 and 2

  • Return to Canberra approx 5:30PM

  • Clean up dive gear (part of the training)

Open Water Dives 3 and 4 (1 day of the following weekend)

  • Drive down to the coast - leave Canberra at 7:00AM

  • Training Dives 3 and 4

  • Final exam

  • Diver certification presentation

  • Return to Canberra approx 5:30PM

  • Clean up dive gear (part of the training)

  • 1 on 1 with the instructor

  • Transport to and from the coast each weekend

  • Dive equipment - BCD's with Integrated weights, Spring Strap Fins and Wrist mounted modern Dive computers.
